Some days, you just need something different. Something that gets your students out of their seats, working together, and actually excited about learning. That’s when I turn to an escape room activity.
It combines the best of both worlds: the fun of an escape room and the brain-boosting challenge of puzzles. They’re perfect for team building, critical thinking practice, or just a Fun Friday that students will be talking about long after the bell rings.
Why escape rooms work so well in the classroom
Escape rooms are engaging for students but they also have so many benefits. They check so many boxes for both students and teachers because they:
- Encourage teamwork and communication
- Build persistence through trial and error
- Stretch problem-solving and logic skills
- Make learning feel like a game instead of a worksheet
Instead of groans, you’ll hear things like “Wait, I think I got it!” and “Let’s try this!” And isn’t that the kind of energy we all want in our classrooms?
And you’ll love watching your students rise to the challenge with enthusiasm, working together to solve each clue or task and celebrate their success.
A ready-to-go word & logic puzzle escape room
One of my favorite ways to introduce escape room challenges into the classroom is with this Word & Logic Puzzles Escape Room. The puzzles are print and go, with relatively little prep for the other parts of the game. There is even an option to have students enter codes on digital locks for easy classroom management.
This escape room activity not only strengthens students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but it also builds spelling and vocabulary skills!
Here’s how it works:
- Students solve a series of 4 word and logic puzzles, which when done correctly will earn them a key with a code word. (Option to use printed keys or students input codes on a Google Form to receive digital keys to make the game self-guided)
- Students solve a series of 4 word and logic puzzles, which when done correctly will earn them a key with a code word. (Option to use printed keys or students input codes on a Google Form to receive digital keys to make the game self-guided)
- Several options for differentiation are included to adjust the challenge level.
- Printable hint cards are included to allow students the option to ask for a hint if they get stuck. By only allotting a certain number of cards to use, they’re encouraged to think critically and give their best attempt at each puzzle before asking for a hint.
- You get extensive teacher notes with complete answer key and explanation for each part of the activity to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.
- For an optional extra layer of fun, you can put treats, stickers, reward passes, classroom coupons, or other small prizes in a lockbox set to the final code.
It’s flexible enough to use for team building, sub plans, back to school or before a break, or anytime you want to shake up your routine.
