Looking for a way to make grammar review a little more exciting during Halloween week? This Halloween Grammar Review and Editing Magic Squares Puzzle combines meaningful ELA practice with a fun, self-checking puzzle that gives students an extra challenge as they work!
Instead of another traditional worksheet, students get to put their editing and proofreading skills to the test while identifying common grammar mistakes and solving a Halloween-themed Magic Squares puzzle.
Grammar Practice Disguised as a Puzzle!
The activity includes 24 Halloween-themed task cards, each featuring three different but related sentences that form a mini-story. Two of the three sentences contain a common grammar error. Students examine the sentences to identify the one that is written correctly.
But here’s where the puzzle comes in!
Each task card has a Halloween image that matches a space on the Magic Squares response sheet. Students record the number associated with their correct answer in the matching space.
When the puzzle is solved correctly, every row and column adds up to 65!
If the numbers don’t add up, students know there’s a mistake somewhere and can go back to review their answers.

Common Grammar Mistakes and Editing Skills Students Practice
While students are busy solving the puzzle, they’re also identifying common grammar and writing errors and reviewing important skills, including:
- Homophones and commonly confused words
- Spelling and punctuation
- Subject-verb agreement and verb tense
- Pronoun use
- Sentence fragments and run-on sentences
What I really love about the task cards is that each one contains three different sentences rather than three versions of the same sentence. This encourages students to read carefully, consider context, and apply their grammar knowledge instead of simply spotting differences between answer choices.
Flexible Low-Prep Ways to Use This Activity
These task cards work well for independent grammar review, literacy centers, partner or small-group activities, and early finishers. Students can complete the puzzle in one session or work through the cards over several days.
Want to add some movement? Print the larger task cards (2 sizes are included) and post them around the classroom for a Halloween grammar gallery walk! Students can move from card to card, recording their answers as they work toward completing the puzzle.
Why Teachers and Students Will Love It
For teachers: It’s a ready-to-use activity that provides meaningful grammar practice with common grammar mistakes while incorporating some Halloween fun. The built-in self-checking feature also encourages students to revisit mistakes independently.
For students: There’s a puzzle to solve, a little mystery when the numbers don’t add up, and the satisfaction of completing the Magic Square correctly!
It’s a simple way to turn essential grammar and editing review into something that feels more like a fun challenge than a grammar task.
